A Space with a Story
This space has been thoughtfully created over time, with care and intention in every detail. From the materials used to the way it came together, each part reflects a deeper story and connection to place.
The Story Behind the Space
Much of the space has been built using locally sourced and thoughtfully reclaimed materials.
The countertops are made from salvaged old-growth fir, left behind from railroad logging near Freda Lake in the 1920s. The wood was recovered locally and crafted into place with care and intention.
Throughout the shop, you’ll find fixtures made from locally milled alder and fir, each piece created by skilled local craftspeople and contributing to the warmth and character of the space.
Meet Nicole
Nicole is the heart behind Kelly’s Health Shop, bringing a deep care for community and a thoughtful approach to wellness.
With a background in coaching and a lifelong commitment to learning, she has always been passionate about helping others grow, feel supported, and find what works best for them.
Returning to Powell River to raise her family, Nicole has created a space that reflects her values, connection, education, and a genuine care for the well-being of those around her.
Our Roots
Kelly’s Health Shop has a long and meaningful history, with roots that trace back to a small health food store on Joyce Avenue.
Originally owned and operated by Percy Sands in the late 1960s, the store became a place for natural products and unique finds. When Percy’s health declined, James McKenzie took over the business, renaming it Kelly’s Specialty Shop and continuing to build on its foundation.
Over the years, the shop evolved through different owners, always maintaining its focus on quality products and a genuine interest in health and well-being. From vitamins and specialty foods to carefully selected items that reflected the interests of those behind the counter, the store developed a reputation for offering something a little different.
In 2017, Nicole Rumley took ownership and introduced a renewed vision for the space. While updating the name to Kelly’s Health Shop, she chose to honour the legacy of the business while continuing to grow it in a way that reflects her values of connection, education, and thoughtful care.
